ST. AUGUSTINE – The Florida DOT plans tomorrow to discuss proposed improvements at the intersection of State Roads 13 and 16 and County Road 13 in northwestern St. Johns County.
The public meeting is scheduled at the Trout Creek Park Pavilion, 6795 Collier Road, in St. Augustine. An open house with FDOT staff, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a public comment period beginning at 6:30 p.m.
FDOT has developed three options to deal with congestion at the three-way intersection. The project also will replace a bridge culvert over Wards Creek that is considered deficient. The FDOT design will provide left turn lanes for traffic heading southbound on State Road 13 and westbound on State Road 16.
Additionally, St. Johns County is considering adding a right turn lane at County Road 13 for traffic wanting to head east as part of the FDOT project.
The estimated costs range from $2.5 million to $4.5 million. A temporary diversion road will be built to assist with the construction of the new bridge culvert. Once the construction is complete, the diversion road will be removed.
One of the options would require the removal of a large oak tree in the southeast quadrant of the intersection. Another option would spare the tree by shifting the road slightly to the west which would require additional right-of-way and wetland impacts.
